The Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act, commonly known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare, was signed into law on 3-23-10 to deal with rising healthcare costs and numbers of uninsured.  It includes many consumer protections such as eliminating pre-existing condition exclusions (you can no longer be denied), ending lifetime limits on benefits and capping your maximum out-of-pocket costs (which now includes copays, Rx, deductible & coinsurance), just to name a few.  ACA-compliant plans are Non-Grandfathered and cover Preventive Care at 100%, as well as the 10 Essential Benefits.  The ACA is a fundamental Reform of health insurance in the United States through shared responsibility.  Individuals are required to maintain minimum essential coverage, qualify for an exemption from coverage, or pay a penalty when filing their Federal income tax return.

Financial assistance may be available to household incomes within specific percentages of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) who do not have access to affordable employer-sponsored coverage.  Eligibility for the Premium Tax Credit is based on household size and modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) claimed on your Federal IRS Income Tax return.  To obtain a subsidy, one must enroll through the Exchange (a.k.a. Marketplace).
